One of the most common questions I hear from expecting parents is:“When should we book our newborn photos?”
Usually followed closely by:“Is it too early?” or “Should we wait until baby arrives?”
If you’re expecting, the short answer is this:👉 The best time to book your newborn photography session is during pregnancy, ideally in your second or early third trimester.
Here’s why — and what booking early really means for you.
Why booking newborn photography during pregnancy matters.
Newborn photography doesn’t work like a standard appointment. Babies arrive on their own timeline, which is why sessions are booked around due dates, not exact dates.
When you book your newborn session during pregnancy, I reserve space in my calendar around your due date. This allows flexibility for:
Early arrivals
Late babies
Inductions or caesareans
Post-birth recovery time
Because I specialise in newborn photography in Barossa, I only take a limited number of newborn sessions each month to ensure this flexibility.

When is the best time to photograph a newborn?
The ideal window for newborn photos is between 5 and 14 days old
During this stage:
Babies are naturally sleepier
They curl more easily into womb-like positions
Sessions feel calmer and more relaxed
Feeding and settling is often smoother
That said, every baby is unique — and sessions are always baby-led.
Your baby sets the pace. Always.
A real moment from the studio
Over the years, I’ve welcomed hundreds of newborns into my studio — and no two sessions have ever been the same. Some babies arrive weeks early. Others keep everyone waiting. Some sessions need to be gently postponed to allow parents time to recover or babies time to settle.
Because these families booked their newborn photography session during pregnancy, everything was already taken care of.
One mum said:“I was so relieved this was already organised. Once baby arrived, I had enough to think about.”
That’s exactly why booking early matters.

What happens after you book your newborn session?
Once your newborn photography session is secured:
Your due date is pencilled into my calendar
I intentionally limit bookings around that time
You receive preparation guidance and next steps
After your baby arrives, you simply let me know and we confirm your session date
There’s no pressure, no rushing, and no expectation for your baby to behave a certain way. Sessions allow plenty of time for feeding, cuddles, and settling.
Is it too late to book newborn photos after baby arrives?
If your baby has already arrived and you’re reading this — don’t worry.
It’s always worth reaching out to check availability. While booking during pregnancy is recommended, I understand that plans change and newborn photos aren’t always top of mind before birth.
Older newborn sessions can still be incredibly meaningful, focusing on:
Natural expressions
Family connection
Tiny details you never want to forget.
Why newborn photos are more important than you realise
The first weeks with your baby pass in a blur.
The tiny fingers. The way they fit perfectly in your arms. The feeling of everything being brand new.
Newborn photography isn’t just about beautiful images — it’s about preserving the beginning of your family’s story.
Booking early allows those moments to be captured calmly, safely, and without stress.

Ready to book your newborn session?
If you’re currently expecting, I recommend securing your newborn photography session during pregnancy. It’s one less thing to think about once your baby arrives — and something you’ll never regret doing.
